WAKE-UP CALL

The Good Mother anticipates needs before they even arise, and in this area forty-four-year-old Michelle excelled. She knew how to run a home. Michelle had left her career to unleash her talents on parenting two girls. Motherhood became what Michelle did, who she was. She was good at it. But the summer her daughter Taylor attended the Girls Leadership Institute, Michelle learned the dark side of her painstaking vigilance.

Michelle had always worried about her daughter, and she knew that fifteen-year-old Taylor would demand her best efforts as a mother. Taylor was sensitive, she wore her heart on her sleeve, and even the little things were hard on her. When she was upset, Taylor could be inconsolable, awash in dark, intensifying emotions. Michelle wanted to protect her. When Taylor struggled with adults or peers, Michelle told her it wasn’t her fault.

I think I would sort of just try and steer her away from it instead of just let her go for it. If a teacher didn’t like her, it just broke her heart. I just made excuses. . . . Instead of saying, “Taylor, you’re being oversensitive, this is not that big a deal.”
